Sea, hills & sky · Midges
Midge forecast
When the Highland midge is likely to be out, village by village, over the next 48 hours.
What drives midges
- Wind: they can't fly in more than about 7 mph. A breeze is your best friend.
- Light: they're worst at dawn and dusk and on dull, still days, and avoid bright sun.
- Warm, damp air: humid evenings after rain bring them out. Cold or dry air keeps them down.
- Place: sheltered glens, woodland and boggy ground are worse than breezy beaches.
About this forecast
This is our own model of midge-friendly conditions, built from the hourly weather forecast. It doesn't count midges. Use it to pick the breezier spot or time for your walk or barbecue.
